When you make yourself a priority

We take on so many responsibilities in life that too often we forget to make ourselves our own priority. Yet when you make yourself a priority life can flourish so much better.

Whether it’s our role as the money maker, a parent, carer or one of the many other roles we fulfil in our lifetime we always seem to give these priority over our own selves. I said way back in 2011 that “You can’t take care of anyone else well if you don’t take care of yourself. When you make yourself a priority, not only do you benefit, but so do the people around you” in a blog titled Make Yourself a Priority.

How many times have you foregone the gym because you have too much work piling up or grabbed a quick unhealthy lunch because you’re far to busy running around doing things for other people? Yet have you ever stopped to think about the effects this could have on your health. Can there be anything more important than your health?

There comes a time in all our lives when we start to think that we’ve not fulfilled our true potential. The feeling of discontentment begins to build up within us where we start to feel life was meant to be better than this, that we were supposed to have achieved so much more. At these times you’ve probably grabbed a self help book off a book shelf, taken a course or at least made some effort to find solutions. But for how long have you stuck with it?

Normally before to long life intercedes, the demands placed on you from outside become to great and you just continue doing what you’ve always done. Yet we all know doing what we’ve always done will just repeat the same results you’ve always got. You can’t afford to keep repeating your same mistakes over and over again. Your health, happiness and success are what matter most. Infact you are the most important thing you have to take care off, tend to and nurture.

When you realise this you will treat yourself with the importance you deserve and finally allow yourself to focus on simply you. When you do at last take time on yourself, many things will try to distract you, pushing you off course if you allow them to do so. You simply must show your resolve to carry on with your mission to improve yourself. That is one of the keys to self improvement.

You’re worth it as is making life better than it is right now. I often refer to us as being buds ready to blossom. But we need to water and feed ourselves with the right things to make this happen. You start by accepting you’re the most important person in your life? When you make yourself a priority in your life, your life becomes much more enjoyable. When you make yourself a priority, not only do you benefit, but so do the people around you. If you are burned out, stressed out or overloaded, what’s left to give to others? When we take adequate care of ourselves this sustains us and gives us the energy to take care of all our responsibilities.

So, please, start making yourself a priority.

    Larry, great post!

I’ve always said, “no one will take your success more seriously than you do.” I think we’re on the same page.
