Dealing with the Weeds in your Inner Garden

Dealing with the weeds in your inner garden refers to nurturing the garden of your mind. A man walked every day through a park passing a massive oak tree. One day he noticed a vine had grown up along its trunk. The vine was only small, so nothing to worry about. But over the years the vine started growing taller and thicker, until one day the entire lower half of the tree was covered by the vine’s creepers. The mass of creepers was so thick that the tree was completely blocked from view. This huge, solid oak was quite literally being taken over by the vine; the life was being squeezed out of it.

I want you to start thinking about your own life and what ‘weeds’ you are nurturing within your mind. Are you allowing some of the weeds in your life to grow wild so as to totally slow down your progress in life.

Napoleon Hill taught that thoughts are the seeds from which all wealth springs. He shows how important it is to cultivate our inner mind to achieve success in life.

How is your mental garden? Are you experiencing happiness and fulfilment in your life or frustration and impatience? Are you living your life “on purpose” or going through the motions feeling numb and lost on the inside? Are you tending to your garden or letting the weeds take over?

Tending the garden of the mind is one of the most under-utilized strategies we have at our disposal to make positive changes in our lives.

Weeds in the garden of the mind are the thoughts, beliefs and perceptions that when left unattended choke the life of the ideas and thoughts you want to grow.

These weeds leave you discouraged, demoralized, fearful, and even depressed. They are the perceptions that will derail you from accomplishing what you set out to do or rob you of your peace of mind. They can take over your mind and lead to negative thoughts, and can grow into anxiety, physical illness and chronic pain

I talk to so many people of around my age, I’ll call them mid lifers, and they say things such as:

  • There is so much more I thought I would have done with my life by now
  • I don’t have enough time to pursue my dream
  • The best years of my life are over
  • I can’t really stand the work I do, but what else could I do

You need to pull your weeds out from the root and confront the issues you are holding on to. Don’t be lazy about them; you’ve probably left them way to long already. The time is now to clear them out.

I wrote an article featuring an exercise to discover your weeds and remove them back in April 2011 called The Clearing and Weeding of Negative Thoughts, so please go and try this exercise for yourself, it is very powerful.

You have the power to create physical health and mental health, simply by remembering to tend the field of your mind with the attentive and loving hand of a master gardener tending your flower beds, culling out the weeds so that the blossoms may come to fruition.
