Detox Your Mind

This blog post offers you a very simple tool to implement into your life, helping you to detox your mind, which has the power to totally transform your life. Recently I had a coaching call with one of my clients who was caught up in an incredible negative mindset which made him incapable of dealing with problems that he was facing. It was essential to get him into a better place within his mind so that he could look at his problems with more calm and clarity to get them sorted out. The tool I’m giving you today worked for him and accomplished what was needed. Let it do the same for you.

Will this tool help you?

If your overall thoughts and actions are not conducive to living and enjoying a healthy, happy life, it is time to clean out your mental and emotional clutter, and this tool will do exactly that.

Once you have this in your personal armoury you will be able to put a stop to all the mental garbage often running amok amongst your thoughts, taking control of your mind, and bringing about vast improvements in your health.

By keeping your thoughts positive and enlightened you will boost your wellness, by allowing negative thought patterns to continue this will just make you sick. It’s a fact that one of the main instigators of illness is stress, and stress is amplified by negative thinking.

So good health begins with peace of mind and is essential for self-healing. A wide variety of lifestyle changes can impact your mental and physical health such as Exercise, Nutrition, Diet, Empowering Relationships, Fun and Recreation, Relaxation and Stress Management, all of which are important aspects of a healthy lifestyle. But to improve overall well-being you have to stop your negative mental chatter.

You see negative thoughts, beliefs and behaviours poison your mental health by creating unhappiness, insecurity, fear and stress. That is why it is essential to detox your mind and make it part of living a healthy lifestyle.

But how do you take control of your mental and emotional health?

First you have to be prepared to take full responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, responses and reactions, and then show commitment and discipline to regularly ensuring you detox your mind.

Our brains produce as many as 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Alas a vast majority of these are often incredibly negative, so to detox your mind isn’t easy. So let me give you the method to help.

Step 1. Create your happy list.

When things get a little too stressful it is easy to let your thoughts spiral out of control. I always suggest to my clients that they have a “Happy List” close at hand. This is a list of things that you know, no matter what, always put a smile on your face and helps elevate your mood.

This will give you positive thoughts to look at to stop your negative thoughts.

Here are a few questions to get you started.

• Who do you love?
• List the 5 greatest achievements in your life so far?
• List 5 of your personal strengths?
• List 5 things you admire about yourself?
• What are 5 of your happiest memories?
• What are 5 things you love doing?
• Who makes you happy?
• What else makes you happy?

Write everything down and compile your happy list. Keep your happy list somewhere visible – in your journal, on the fridge, or on a sticky note on your computer desktop as a reminder of the things that make you happy.

This should take you no more than 10 minutes of focused, clear thinking.

Step 2. Seven Day Mental Detox Exercise.

This is the hard part, but the one that transforms your life.

I simply am going to ask you over the next 7 days to cut out all of your negativity in order to detox your mind. The process you need to follow is very easy.

For seven days you must not allow yourself to dwell for a single moment on any kind of negative thought. You must keep watch yourself for a whole week over your thoughts and not allow your mind to dwell on any that are not positive, constructive, optimistic, or kind.

You need to monitor your inner dialogue, capturing every negative thought as it arises. As it does refuse to accept it and say STOP! Then focus on a positive thought from your happy list for just a short time.

Keep doing this for 24 hours a day for 7 days and ensure you do not entertain, or dwell upon any negative thoughts.

Of course, many negative thoughts will come to you all day long. Some of them will just drift into your mind of their own accord. Other negative thoughts will be given to you by other people, either in conversation or by their conduct, or you will hear disagreeable news perhaps by letter or telephone, or you will see crimes and disasters announced in the newspaper headlines. These things, however, do not matter as long as you do not entertain them.

The whole idea is to have seven days of unbroken mental discipline in order to get the mind definitely bent in a new direction once and for all.

Whenever a negative thought floats into your mind, immediately turn it out and think of something else.

Whatever the negative thought may be do not accept them, by fearing them, by believing them, by being indignant or sad about them, or by giving them any power at all. As soon as one of these negatives show up just change immediately by saying STOP and think about something on your happy list.

So let’s be clear about what I’m asking you to do:

• Don’t dwell on any negative and thoughts or feelings.
• Don’t entertain any of these negative thoughts for more than a minute.
• Although you will have negative thoughts, you are not allowed to speak it.
• As soon as you have a negative thought you must reverse it in your mind immediately, erase it.
• For the next 7 days the whole focus of your life will be on solutions and not problems; on what is right in your life instead of what’s wrong.
• If you go on for more than 1 minute thinking negatively then you must start over, from repeating day one, the following day.
• You must go 7 consecutive days without holding or entertaining any unresourceful or negative thought, feeling or emotion.

Once you have achieved these 7 consecutive days you will now have control over your mind and your inner voice. Don’t then full back into bad habits and leave your mind to once again begin building its negative voice. If you pay constant attention to this tool you will detox your mind on a constant basis and this in itself will transform your life.
