Move past your past

One of the most important things you have to do to move your life forward, improving the way things are for you is to allow yourself to move past your past. Too many of you allow things from your history to hold you back. Whether you spend too much time reflecting on these past events or whether they are just eating away at you subconsciously you have to release the shackles they have placed on you, and live with your eyes to the future and no longer behind to your past.

By leaving your past behind you give yourself the best opportunity to live life to the fullest, and surely you deserve it, to no longer be held back by your past.

If you cannot release yourself from this hold that your past has over you, then you will never truly be able to make your life the way you deserve to make it. Your future can still be great, but not if you keep repeating this mistake of allowing your past to stop you.

Many of you allow yourself to not just re-experience your past difficulties & nightmares, and the pain they bring, but you allow them to affect your current life. I know I did for a while.

Childhood nightmares of my eldest sister’s drug addiction

My sister’s death

Losing my home

Seeing the sadness in my daughters when they had to move house and change schools

Going through the indignity of bankruptcy

I could go on and on recalling all my memories, the sadness and pain they would bring with them. But they’re past and my life’s all about the now and the future. Why then would I allow them to keep inflicting pain and no doubts stop me from going to create my brilliant life?

We all have a past.

Maybe yours included traumatic experiences

Unhappy memories

Painful events

You may well look back and see your life’s journey as being grossly unfair.

But I want you to understand one thing – it is simply crazy to allow the past to dictate your life. I’m not down playing the events themselves, maybe even the horrors you’ve lived through, but I’m saying you need to cut out the impact they have on your life right now.

Without a doubt:

  1. Traumatic things will have happened to you
  2. You made mistakes, some may have been extremely bad in consequence
  3. You also adopted many beliefs, some of which are incredibly debilitating.

If you allow it to, it will keep you down if you let it, it will keep you poor, stop you trying new things, in fact if you allow it to, it will keep you trapped in a life that you don’t like.

The past is over. Don’t view your future from the perspective of yesterday .Edmund Burke said:” the past should be a springboard, not a hammock.

I don’t want you any longer stuck in your past, whether you know you are or not. And that is why you simply have to move past your past.

You have to accept the past is past, it’s dead. It cannot be changed, but it can serve to give you guidance and wisdom so that you can make better decisions in the future. All that matters is where you are going from this moment forward. Focus on your future and the possibilities you have waiting for you.

If you have issues from your past that you haven’t fully dealt with or understand thoroughly they will continue to run your life from behind the scenes. That is why you have to get past your past.

I used a very simple method to help me achieve this, and that was to write my life story, like my personal biography. Getting all these memories down on paper so to speak allowed me to yes remember them but realise they were a thing of the past.

You have to make the decision to allow yourself to heal your past.

Make the choice to forgive and forget. No more carrying around the memory or the pain. Particularly forgive yourself and celebrate by moving on. While the pain may never completely disappear, forgiveness can help you release the anger. Allow the memories to go, stop reliving the pain of what happened so to allow yourself to move on.

You can’t change the things that happened in your life, but you can decide how you interpret and respond to them. If you didn’t receive support when you needed it, give it to yourself now.

Getting past your past has the power to change your life because you’ll no longer spend energy and time explaining, denying or trying to forget the life you had, rather you’ll use your energy and time to create the life you want. It’s the first thing I get people to do on my compass for life course. It helps them to get unstuck, allowing them the freedom to focus on their vision for the future and do what’s necessary to build it.
