Are you getting the most out of your home network?

Neil here, filling in for Larry today. I’m following on from his post yesterday but with a techie twist. He posted about us getting the most out of life and how we should all live to our fullest potential. Nearly everyone I know has a broadband connection in there home, but not one of them is putting it to its fullest potential – the possibility of a home network.

Most of us use a router (normally wireless) which enables us to get fast Internet access from the convenience of our settee. What most people don’t realise is the router can be much more than a device which enables you to connect to the world wide web (most commonly known these days as Facebook!)

The majority of home routers are not only great at connecting you to the Internet, they also make it possible for your devices to communicate with each other. A device can be anything from your laptop, to your PC, to your PS3. I love my router. I have all my devices connected to it and use my PC to ‘service’ my other devices. I dump all my music files, videos and photos onto this one PC. If I want to listen to some tunes on my PS3 then no problem. I stream my music files over my home network and can then play them on my PS3 using my Sony Amp for superb sound. If I want to look at some pictures on my laptop I can either access them directly from my PC or even use the streaming facilities of Windows Media Player to do this for me. I can stream my videos onto my XBox 360 if I wish to do so. My router is my friend and its the key to making my home network reach its full potential.

I’m not going to go into great detail on how I do all of this today. I’m going to be getting into some advanced WordPress tutorials on my own site (slimexpress). In order for anyone to really understand the tutorials though, I think I’m going to have to go right back to basics and explain how the Internet and your home network actually work (a lot of people know what the Internet it is, but don’t know how it works). After all, how can you understand how to use WordPress if you don’t fully understand how the platform it sits on works. Along with the WordPress tutorials I’ll also be telling you how you can get the most out of your home network and how to manage and maintain it.

I’m sure Larry will let everyone know when I publish these tutorials and tips & tricks but if you jump over to slimexpress now you can add us to your Facebook profile or follow us on Twitter. If you cant wait for my blog posts then you may find the following links useful to get a head start.
