What causes lack of energy?

Lack of energy can be a normal response to inadequate sleep, overexertion, overworking, stress, lack of exercise, or boredom. When part of a normal response, lack of energy often resolves with a good combination of self-care methods.

The effects of low energy levels

With what I describe as chronic tiredness often comes lack of focus, feelings of being overwhelmed, flu-like symptoms, memory loss, chronic aches and pains, restless sleep, short temper and even depression.

While many people accept their tiredness as part and parcel of their daily lives, it needn’t be the standard way of life. Yes, we are more overworked and under more stress than ever, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Fatigue accounts for something like 10 million doctor office visits each year. Everyone gets tired. That is how the body signals it needs to rest and recharge. Overwork yourself physically and you feel it in your muscles or joints. Overwork yourself mentally and you need a break.

But when your need for rest seems excessive or becomes disruptive – thwarting your productivity, making everyday tasks seem daunting, robbing you of enjoyment and interaction with others – what once may have been tiredness has become fatigue.

They struggle every morning, fighting their way out of bed and then all day long they feel lethargic and exhausted. Their lack of energy leads them to drinking loads of coffee, and binge on sugary snacks. They get home from work capable of nothing more than collapsing in front of the television. I love coming home from a hard workout session in the gym and collapsing on the couch in utter exhaustion. For the next hour I’m content to let my body melt into the armchair, allowing myself to relax, unwind and recharge.
